Our Pei
Hi, my name is Tango! I am a male Shar-Pei, who came from a shelter after being surrendered with my ears chewed up by flies. I am learning to trust humans and am eager to please. I ride well in the car and get along with other dogs and am just happy to be by my “person”. I am looking for a forever home to call my own. Won‘t you please consider adopting me?
Hi, I'm Pongo! I am sweet, two year old boy. I am a little shy at first, especially with men; but once I get to know you, I am very, very lovable. My foster Mom says that I am her shadow. I am being fostered with three young children and I am really good with them. One thing I don't really care for is cats, so need to find a home without any of those. I am crate-trained, housebroken, up-to-date on shots and neutered. Do I sound like the guy for you? If so, please fill out an application and ask for me, Pongo!

This poor guy, Cezar, has been neglected and abused. We‘re not sure what happened to his tail.
It appears that it may have been inflicted by a person, but our goal is to get him healthy & ready for adoption.
Please check back for more information about Cezar.
WARNING: These pictures of Cezar are very graphic.
For updates on Cezar, see Cezar‘s Journal
Update 4/27/2010: We are having a fundraiser for Teddy and Cezar (now Beau).
Please visit Teddy Bear and Cezar's donation page for more details or to donate.

Hi, I‘m Piper, a sweet, black female Shar-Pei who was rescued from a shelter in NC - whew! I am now in a foster home in Virginia. I am heartworm positive, so will need heartworm treatment. I will also need to be spayed and have entropian surgery, so it will be a little while before I am available for adoption. Please check back for more information about me after I get settled in at my foster home.
Hi, I'm Teddy Bear, and I got my awesome name because I am plush and soft just like a teddy bear!
My foster mom says that I am "velvety" soft! I am a big, sweet loveable guy who enjoys hugs and rubs.
I am very mellow and my foster mom says that I am an easy dog to have in the house.
I am experiencing lots of new things at my foster home...like a bed - I was not quite sure what to do with a bed at first,
but now I have it figured out - comfy! Playing with toys was new to me too, but these are great fun; and as you
can see from my photos, I love playing with toys! I like the other dogs here and am having a good time hanging out
and playing with them. I am being
introduced to cats slowly; and so far, I think I am being pretty good. Let's see, what else is new...oh...the
doggie door...I am getting used to that contraption. I used to just go out, but have figured out that I can
come in too - cool! I enjoy being outside and can often be found passed out in the grass or on the patio.
If you are interested in a sweet, loveable (and don‘t forget soft like a teddy bear) guy, please
fill out an application and ask for Teddy Bear!
Update 4/27/2010: Teddy Bear has been diagnosed with mast cell tumors.
The vet‘s recommendation is to surgically remove them and follow up with treatment.
Teddy Bear is as spry as ever and has no idea anything is going on. His foster mom has switched him to a raw,
dehydrated, organic pet food as step one toward this fight. Dogs with mast cell tumors cannot have grains/carbs.
We are having a fundraiser for Teddy and Cezar (now Beau).
Please visit Teddy Bear and Cezar's donation page for more details or to donate.
Donations towards Teddy‘s surgery and treatment will be greatly appreciated.
Update 5/21/2010:
Teddy Bear‘s surgery went well.
Teddy Bear was a hit with the veterinary staff. Everyone commented on what a great dog he is and how sweet he was!
Teddy is wearing a tough guy t-shirt to protect his incision from any scratching.
When he was picked up, he was up and on his feet behaving as if nothing happened.
His pathology results should be back in 3-5 days.
We‘re praying this is a stage I grade cancer.
Update 5/29/2010:
Great news! We received Teddy Bear‘s Pathology report. The test confirmed Mast Cells, Grade II. Clear margins were obtained through surgery,
and there is no evidence of vascular or lymphatic invasion.
The histologic grade is based on a study published in Veterinary Pathology Vol. 21 pp.469-474, 1984
“Canine Cutaneous Mast Cell Tumor: Morphological Grading and Survival Time in 83 Dogs”. Forty-Seven percent
of dogs with Grade II mast cell tumor survived longer than 1500 days. A different study said that the
median survival time for dogs with Grade II mast cell tumors having a mitotic index of less than or equal to
5 (the vet said Teddy Bear had 0) was 70 months.
Because Teddy Bear had two tumors when he was diagnosed and one disappeared, there is a chance that another
tumor or tumors could reappear. Chemotherapy is not a great treatment
for mast cell tumors as they don‘t respond well.
Teddy Bear‘s vet did say if there is a tumor to get, apparently this one would be a good one to
have as it‘s not dividing or invading any major areas.
We think this is as close to a clean bill of health as we‘re going to get.
Update 6/30/2010:
A lump on Teddy Bear's back has returned. This lump was originally aspirated at the
same time as the lump that was removed, but it went into hiding and could not be found during his
first surgery.
Hi, I‘m Ronnie, a 3.5 year old five point red dilute male horsecoat Shar-Pei! My mom, Lea, and I were rescued from a
kill shelter in NC.
My foster mom says that I am a real sweetheart and an extremely loving guy!
I like to
play with people and enjoy chew toys, stuffed animals and tennis balls. I bonded nicely with my little foster
“sisters” Sophia and Summer. We played chase and tug a war with the
various stuffed animals all day long.
I am quite prey driven, so a home without cats or other small pets would be best for me.
I was very emaciated, had heartworms, and was in need of entropion surgery when I first came in to rescue,
but my foster mom says that
I am doing amazingly well and have gained nearly 15 pounds.
My entropion has been repaired and my eyes are now clear.
I made some new videos so everyone can see how
very handsome I have become! Video 1 ~ Video 2
Update 8/25/2010:
Ronnie has completed all his rehabilitation and is now available for rehoming to the right family.
At 60 pounds of pure muscle, his “tank like” stature and sweet mellow temperament attract
both macho and gentle pet owners alike. Due to prior emaciation, Ronnie can be very food motivated
and excitable, making him not suitable for homes with small children. He has remained healthy on Blue Basics
Salmon and Sweet Potato dog food that can be purchased at Petsmart, and he should continue a restricted diet
of “only dog food” to prevent any IBD relapse. Ronnie requires firm handling and alpha
leadership to maintain control when needed. Other times, he‘s very mellow and loves his belly
rubbed, and will cuddle on the couch with you. He‘s looking for someone wanting an active
companion that likes attention but is still crateable and can be left alone. With proper food management
and introductions, he gets along with most other dogs, but no cats or other small animals.
Hi, I'm China (previously Gigi)! I am about four years old. Buffy (aka Lexi) and I were found in horrible shape, but a nice lady in Virginia took us in and nursed us back to health. We are both very sweet and are doing fine with other dogs and humans of all sizes. I had a bath and was a very good girl! They say we will make excellent additions to our “furever” homes. I need a foster home, or better yet, a “furever” home!
Hi, I'm Buffy (aka Lexi)! I am about two years old and have an awesome fat face! Gigi and I were found in horrible shape (I have some buckshot wounds on my side), but a nice lady in Virginia took us in and nursed us back to health. We are both very sweet and are doing fine with other dogs and humans of all sizes.
Hi, I‘m Olivia, a four month old brindle Shar-Pei mix pup...you can see that Lola and I have the Shar-Pei face, wrinkles and coat; but we have some pretty unique looking ears! No one is quite sure what breed they are from - any guesses? Anyhow, I think my ears are cool! Lola and I were rescued from a NC shelter where we were picked up as strays. We love each other and I like to know where Lola is. We sleep on the same bed and play well together and with others. We get along well with dogs and love kids. We walk well on a leash and are very sweet and adorable.
Hi, I‘m Lola, an adorable four month old Shar-Pei mix pup. I was found as a stray with Olivia. We love each other; and as you can see from our pictures, we like to be together. We sleep on the same bed and play well together and with others. We get along well with dogs and love kids. We walk well on a leash and are very sweet and adorable.
Hi, I‘m Georgia, a sweet 2-3 year old female Shar-Pei. I was found as a stray with a
terrible case of cherry eye; but that has been fixed and I am so happy that I can see now!
I don‘t want to brag too much, but everyone says that I am absolutely wonderful and my
temperment is superb. I am a very loving girl and like to give kisses.
Now that I can see, I really like to play ball. I love to play and would really like to
find a home with a dog about my size to play with. I am living with some cats now, but they don't
seem to understand me. I get swatted every now and then for getting too close, so I think I would
be better off in a house with no cats.
I have already been spayed and am ready to find my “furever” home! If you are looking for
a sweet, loving girl, please
fill out an application and ask for Georgia!
Adoption Pending
Hi, I‘m Summer! I am an adorable eight month old, fawn traditional horsecoat female Shar-Pei.
I am very petite, weighing only 35 pounds. I have been through a lot.
I was rescued from a North Carolina animal control facility where I ended up with kennel cough.
Then I had something called pyometra (I‘m not really sure what that is, but everyone was really
worried) and had to have an emergency spay. Fortunately, my spay surgery went well; and
I recovered nicely. I was so excited because I was finally ready for adoption, and a family
was going to come and meet me on 7/19. I had my bags packed because I knew they would not be
able to resist my beautiful eyes. I even made a new video - check out “My Video” below.
Just when I thought my luck was turning around, I was diagnosed with heartworms (sounds gross). Now
I need to be treated before I can be adopted...they say this will take until August, so I will be hanging
out at my foster home for a while longer.
I hear that all
of this is expensive and there are lots of us with medical issues. If you can help me, please click on
my “Sponsor Me” button and say the donation is for Summer. Thanks!
Update 7/28/2010: The end of heartworm treatment can‘t come fast enough for Ronnie and Summer.
They are both doing well and looking forward to ‘freedom”. They are looking so good
in their new video!
Update 8/13/2010: Summer is healthy and clear for adoption. She had a family waiting to
adopt her so now has an adoption pending.

Hi, I'm Dolly Baby! I am less than 1 year old. I was rescued from a potentially abusive environment in time to be spared any pain. I am petite but have an enormous amount of love to share. I like all people and get along with dogs. I met a cat on my overnite transport and all I could think to do was bark. I am spayed and ready to go to my forever safe home!
Hi, my name is Mia! I‘m an eight month old female Shar-Pei puppy who was rescued from a breeder.
I get along with dogs. I was spayed and had my eye surgery on Tuesday, 6/29; so I am feeling better now.
Update 8/5/2010:
Mia is healthy again and actively searching for her “furever” home. Mia is a petite little girl
and weighs about 27 pounds. She has had all of her vetting done, so her vaccines are current
and she has been spayed. Mia loves to play with other dogs and would do best with a 4-legged brother or sister.
Mia is housebroken and crate trained. She sleeps in her crate at night and gets crated when
we leave the house. She was introduced to a cat and showed some interest, but was not overbearing about it.
Mia‘s ideal home will have a fenced yard, older children and a 4-legged brother or sister. Mia takes
her time warming up to new people. She loves teenage children and prefers woman to men. Mia will only
be placed in the Hampton Roads area because of her shyness.
Adoption Pending
Hi, I'm Kato! I am a 6 month old black bear coat male Shar-Pei who was rescued from a Philadelphia shelter. I am good with dogs, cats and people. I am already housetrained too! I am learning how to walk on a leash and am doing really well with that. My foster mommie says that I am an amazing dog! Are you looking for an adorable Shar-Pei pup? Then look no further - fill out an application and ask for Kato!
Hi, everyone! I'm Princess, a beautiful one year old chocolate Shar-Pei. I am new
here and everyone is just getting to know me. I was in a shelter, which was
really scary. My time was up and I knew something bad was going to happen, but
thankfully the rescue people got me out of there. I am safe now and am looking forward to getting to know my new
foster dad. The first year of my life has been kind of rough, so I am really looking forward
to learning about the good stuff!
Update 7/19/2010: It‘s me, Princess! I'm just checking in to tell everyone that it is great here! I have a nice
new collar and my foster dad took some great pictures of me.
I like the one above the best! I have lots of toys and my own bed too!
Foster Home Needed
Hi, yep, it‘s me Salsa. You may remember me from earlier this year. I was adopted in
May and was happy in my new home. I am very sad because my person just passed away. I will be
coming back to the rescue. I would really love to find a foster home, but I need one without
other dogs. Can you foster me? I have been so happy living in a home...I really do not
want to be in a kennel.
I am an adorable, fawn female horsecoat Shar-Pei. I am a little over three years old.
I am very petite, weighing only about 30 pounds.
I am an amazingly sweet girl and very people friendly, but would prefer a home where I can be the only dog. I
love to play with stuffed toys and chew
on bones. I have a lot of energy, but settle down after a little play time. Do I sound like the
girl for you? If so, please fill out an application and ask for Salsa!
Adoption Pending
Hi, I‘m Champ. I am a new arrival, but the rescue folks say that someone has been waiting for me! I have an adoption pending...if anything changes, I will let you know. Thank you to everyone who helped to save me!
Adoption Pending
Hi, may name is Gracie. I am new here and already have an adoption pending! I met some nice people at my foster home and they just fell in love with me (really, how could you not!), so things are looking good for me. Please take a look at my other Pei friends who are waiting for their furever homes!
Foster Home Needed (September)
Hi, I‘m Denny!
I am a fawn male Shar-Pei who was rescued from a Baltimore shelter. Boy am I glad to be out of there.
I was marked urgent, and I heard that was NOT good. I am safe now thanks to everyone
who helped to get me out of there. The shelter folks say that I am a funny boy who
deserves a chance at the good life. Maybe you can help me to learn about the good life?
Update 8/29/2010: How do you like my new picture? No more sad face!
I am feeling much better. I would prefer to be in a home with other dogs. I like learning new
things and am happy to please.
Hi everyone! I‘m a new girl recently rescued from New York City. The shelter called me Sandy, but my foster family has given me a new name, BrookLynn, for a fresh start to my new life! I like it - how about you? I'm a young girl, about one year old. I'm just getting settled in at my foster home, so please check back soon for updates.
Hey everyone, I‘m Candyland, but you can call me Candy. I was rescued from a breeder in VA
where I was not very well cared for. I am so glad to be out of there!
I am a friendly girl and like giving Pei kisses, and I also walk well on a leash.
I have been on medical hold for a few weeks while the nice rescue people
had me spayed and examined by the vet. I had some tumors that were removed and tested...all tumors were
benign and there‘s no threat of cancer - phew! I hear that all of this was expensive, so we would
really appreciate any donations.
I am feeling much better and have settled in at my foster home. Because of my past, I am
a little insecure around new animals. Ronnie, my awesome foster brother, is helping
me to feeling more secure about playing and interaction. We have been having fun playing
in the yard. Foster mom says that with proper introduction and time,
I will learn to accept other animals as well. I absolutely love all people I‘ve met so far, both
young and old.
I am all cleared for adoption, so all of you who have been waiting for me to be ready to go,
hurry up and get your applications in!
Here are some new videos of me:
Me and Ronnie ~
Just Me
Hi, my name is Taz...as you can see I am a beautiful girl! I have a great temperament and am well behaved with other dogs. It takes me a little while to warm up to men...they just need to get some yummy treats to win me over! I am both house and crate trained. I like the crate and will go in a crate on my own if something makes me uneasy. I know some commands like sit and down, but some obedience training would be helpful for me. I don't stay well and did run off once, so a secure fenced yard would be best for me. I don‘t want to get lost again!
